Glacier breaks 5 school swim marks at state meet

HARDIN — It was a record-setting showing by the Glacier swim team on Friday at the 45th annual state championships.

“Glacier had 19 personal best (times) and set five school records,” Flathead/Glacier swim coach Dave Lillard said.

“In some ways, yes,” he said of his squad exceeding his expectations.

“But I hope some individuals will swim faster tomorrow.”

Glacier will have 12 swimmers in the water today in 11 events.

Flathead has four swimmers competing in four events on the final day.

Glacier’s Makena Siebenaler set new school records in the 50 (25.62) and 100 (55.47) freestyle events.

Siebenaler, Jessica Stenberg, Sara Burch and Emma Hornby broke the old school record in the 400 freestyle relay (3:58.90) by three seconds.

Joshua Loyda set a new school record in the 100 backstroke (55.96), and then teamed up with brother Jordan Loyda, Logan Streit and Jake Cirincione to set a new school standard in the 400 freestyle relay (3:22.23).

“That was the most impressive swim of the day,” Lillard said of Joshua Loyda in the 100 backstroke.

“He had flu, came up with his parents, showed up this morning and had an awesome swim.”

He also qualified for the finals in the 200 freestyle.

Cirincione will compete today in the finals of the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly. Streit and Jordan Loyda will both swim the 50 and 100 freestyle, Burch is in the 100 backstroke, Stenberg qualified in both the 200 and 500 freestyle and Maddie Walters is in the finals of the 200 individual medley.

Flathead swimmers posted 12 best times on the first day, led by senior Cassie Krueger in the 50 and 100 freestyle.

She will also swim with Haillie Maas, Johanna Ward and McKenzie Lane in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.

The top six qualifying times Friday make today’s championship finals. The seventh through 12th qualifying times are in the consolation finals.
