Students want to recycle grad gowns

The Whitefish High School Student Council wants to re-purpose for future graduates the graduation gowns of former students stashed away in closets and storage boxes.

The council is holding a graduation-gown donation drive now through the June 1 graduation ceremony for the Class of 2013. Since students wear green, donations are limited to gowns worn in past Whitefish High School graduations.

Student Council member Hania Koziol came up with the idea to reuse the gowns because it seemed wasteful to use them just for one day.

“My brother, he graduated from the high school two years ago. Since then, his graduation robe has been in his closet,” Koziol said. “It’s not being used, why not do something with it?”

The donation drive may save cash-strapped families money and make attendance accessible to all students.

A cap, gown and tassel can cost more than $47, according to a package price on Josten’s website for Montana high schools. Josten's is one of the largest suppliers of graduation regalia.

Koziol hopes to bring in at least 100 gowns and that the donation drive will become an annual event.

Gently used Whitefish High School graduation gowns and caps may be dropped off at the school’s main office.

Koziol also has offered to pick up graduation gowns and caps. For more information or schedule gown collection, call the main office at 862-8600.
