Classes for adults offered at Stumptown Art Studio

| February 27, 2013 8:30 PM

Stumptown Art Studio is hosting a variety of workshops for adults in March. From glass fusing to textile arts, the possibilities to get creative and expand artistic interests, develop existing skills or delve into a new medium are always available at the nonprofit community art center in Whitefish.

The following classes are available in March:

• Clay Time — Resident potter Stephanie Seguin kicks off a four-week session from 10 a.m. to noon March 9. Students will learn techniques for hand building and creating unique pieces such as coil serving plates, a slab bowl, herb planters and a wall sconce.

The fee for the four-week session is $55, or $45 for members. The cost includes all materials.

• Cultural and Art History Club — The club meets from 10 a.m. to noon March 12 to discuss Andrew Wyeth. The group meets monthly for an aesthetic and historical look at state, national and world artists.

There is an annual membership, or pay a $5 drop-in fee to take part in one month’s discussion.

• Glass fusing — This month’s class will create a thick block consisting of 13 layers imbedded with lines and fields of colored glass. The session takes place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. March 13.

Cost is $85, or $75 for members. Basic knowledge of glass fusing is helpful.

• Fabulous Needle Felting — Guest fiber artist and craftsperson Jan Shanahan teaches the workshop from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. March 14. Students will learn how needle felting can change the look of any piece of wool. A technique that combines fibers and punching will result in a beautifully designed wool fabric picture.

All supplies are included in the $55 fee. Just bring your imagination and some snacks to enjoy this relaxing form of art.

• Precious Metal Clay — Kris Kramer leads a class in making jewelry with precious metal clay and cubic zirconia from 6 to 9 p.m. March 18. Come to the class with ideas for your piece. No experience necessary.

Cost is $85, or $80 for members. All supplies are included.

• Wild Women Wednesday — Gather the girls for ladies night out at the studio in a session from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. March 20. Work on your own art projects or purchase pottery, glass fusing or mosaic supplies at the studio. Bring your own food and beverages.

• Canvas & Cocktails — On the final Friday of every month, art instructors guide students in painting after the style of some of the most famous artists in the world while learning about them and their work. On March 29 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. the artist subject will be Thomas Hart-Benton with his scenes from the heartland.

A pre-registration fee of $35, or $30 for members, is required. Everything is provided, but bring along a choice of snacks and cocktails.
