Trout Fishing in America plays in Whitefish

| February 27, 2013 6:00 PM

Known as the “Lennon and McCartney of children’s music,” the musical performing duo Trout Fishing in America has garnered National Indie Awards, Parents Choice Gold Awards, American Library Awards and four Grammy nominations.

This dynamic pair will perform at 7:30 p.m. March 9 at the O’Shaughnessy Center in Whitefish as part of Whitefish Theatre Company’s 2012-13 American Roots Music Series.

Ezra Idlet and Keith Grimwood make up the Arkansas-based duo. While guitarist Idlet is 6 feet 9 inches, and bass player Grimwood stands only at 5 feet 5 inches tall, they are the perfect match when it comes to powerhouse instrumentals and witty song-making.

Known for songs like “My Hair Had a Party Last Night,” about waking up to a very bad hair day, “Eighteen Wheels on a Big Rig,” a counting song about trucks, or the gross “Alien in My Nose,” Idlet and Grimwood can perform from the point of view of a 6-year-old or charm the adult crowd with folksy love songs.

As the Philadelphia Inquirer has noted, these “wily performers alternate between folk-rock and kids' genres. They throw the musical kitchen sink into their songs: folk, reggae, Cajun, blues, tango, rap and comedy routines.”

The group’s name is taken from Richard Brautigan’s abstract novella of the 1960s, and the duo’s songs pay tribute to the author's quirky way of looking at reality.

Idlet and Grimwood, who have been playing together for more than 25 years and have produced 20 albums, are both dads, and the inspiration for their lyrically inventive songs comes from everyday observances, as well as their wild imaginations.

For more information or to preview several songs, listen to Trout Radio at the group’s website, www.troutmusic.com.

In addition to the evening concert, Trout Fishing in America will be offering outreach to Muldown Elementary and Olney-Bissell schools.

Tickets to the evening concert are $15 for adults and $8 for students with reserved seating.
