Flathead/Glacier swim coach Dave Lillard was more than satisfied.

His boys and girls teams were back in action for the first time in three weeks after a lengthy holiday break.

And few swimmers showed any ill affects of the long layoff.

“It was a great swim meet,” Lillard said.

“We had lots of PBs (personal bests) for both teams. That was exciting.”

Joining Flathead and Glacier in the water were the three Missoula schools.

“They were excited,” Lillard said of his swimmers competing again.

“They seemed pretty relaxed. Maybe it was because it was just against Missoula, so it wasn’t a very big meet. Maybe that lack of pressure (also helped swimmers record PBs).”

Glacier’s Makenna Siebenaler broke her own school record in the 100 freestyle.

Teammates Micah Meadors, Sara Burch, John Putnam and Logan Streit all had PBs in the 50 freestyle. Streit now holds the third fastest time in the state.

Maddie Walters and Burch recorded PBs in the 100 butterfly. Walters also registered a PB in the 200 individual medley.

Jake Cirincione swam his best times of the season in the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly. His butterfly time places him second in the state.

In the 100 freestyle, Meadors, Jackie Stenberg, Putnam and Streit all posted PBs.

Alex Augusta, 100 freestyle, and Josh Loyda and Jessica Stenberg, both in 500 freestyle, turned in PB times. Stenberg’s set a new school record.

The 200 freestyle relay team of Siebenaler, Burch, Emma Hornby and Stenberg had a PB time.

And it didn’t stop there.

Jordan Loyda, Cirincione, Streit and Josh Loyda set a new school record by .04 of a second in the 200 freestyle.

Hornby, 100 backstroke, and Tommy Briner, 100 breaststroke, both had PB times.

“I set up the boys 400 free relay so that the race would be close against two mixed varsity and JV relays,” Lillard said.

“The race was close as the third legs finished their 100. Josh Loyda needed to catch his brother Jordan, who had a lead. Josh put in great effort and swam a fast time but could not catch Jordan. I wanted the JV boys to know that they are a vital part of the team. They proved it by helping their relays place first and second.”

Lillard said he was delighted to see Flathead’s Yadira Gil and Rebecca Bruce swim their first 50 freestyle.

“Yadira did not know how to swim when she started in November,” he said. “She has worked diligently every day and learned all of the essentials to perform well in her first meet.

“In the 50 free alone, FHS had 11 personal bests.”

Ethan Timm came close to breaking 30 seconds for the first time, while Johanna Ward did break that barrier for the first time.

Cassie Krueger posted a personal best, and a top five time in the state, in that event. She also broke a minute for the first time in the 100 freestyle.

Jaycee Rocha and Darby Mackenstadt both dropped more than 10 seconds in the 100 freestyle.

And Lauren Daffern joined Johanna Ward in setting best times in the 50 and 100 freestyle.

“It’s great to see both new and veteran swimmers having best times,” Lillard said. “I’m proud of the swimmers. Their hard work in the pool is paying off in new records and personal bests.”

Josh Loyda, 200 and 500 freestyle, Cirincione, 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly, Streit, 50 freestyle, Jordan Loyda, 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke, and Stenberg, 500 freestyle, were individual winners.

Flathead and Glacier are off until the Missoula Invitational on Jan. 19.
