Dave Segerstrom, 66

Dave Segerstrom, 66, of Missoula, passed away peacefully at home, on Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013, after a valiant fight with cancer.

He was born Feb. 28, 1946, in Charles City, Iowa, to the Rev. Charles and Betty Segerstrom.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1967 to 1972.

 He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in social work and Master of Social Work degree from the University of Iowa, and became a licensed clinical social worker.

He was a director of social work at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa, director of social work at Columbus Hospital in Great Falls, and opened his private practice, Montana Behavioral Health, in both Great Falls and Kalispell. In 2008, he moved to Missoula and completed his career working for the Advanced Pain & Spine Institute where he offered pain management psychotherapy.

He was a faculty member of the University of Great Falls from 1990 to 2005, and president of the Montana Chapter of NASW from 2007 to 2009. He was honored as the Montana NASW Chapter's Social Worker of the Year in 2003.  His greatest passion was his work and the clientele he felt fortunate to serve.

When he wasn't working, he loved to cheer on his Iowa Hawkeyes, watch college sports, play golf, travel, garden and advance his epicurean talents in the kitchen.

He is survived by his spouse, Boni Braunbeck, of Missoula; mother, Betty Segerstrom, of Waterloo, Iowa; children, William Segerstrom of Newton, Iowa, Christen Segerstrom and Kristie of Portland, Travis Malone of Bozeman, Angee Murillo and Rob of Hayden, Idaho, Kevin Malone and Tiffany of Roseville, Calif., D’Nette Grover and fiance Keith of Missoula, and Dean Braunbeck and Donna of Spokane; siblings, Diane Glover of Omaha, Neb., Charleen Head of El Mirage, Ariz., and Bryan Segerstrom and Marilyn of Waterloo; grandchildren, Kevin Grover and Keli Grover of Missoula, Aurora Segerstrom of Great Falls, Trevin Murillo and Mekhi Murillo of Hayden, and Reese Braunbeck of Spokane.

A memorial service will be held for family and close friends at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 11, at Cremation and Burial Society of the Rockies in Missoula, followed by a Hawkeye tailgate for all of Dave's friends at the Missoula Country Club at 12:30 p.m. for a celebration of life. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left under the David Segerstrom Memorial Fund at Farmer's State Bank, 3130 N. Reserve St., Missoula MT 59808, or taken to any of the bank's branches. The funds will be used to help establish The First Tee youth golf program in Missoula.
