Missing man found dead in Glacier National Park

The search for Cody Lee Johnson, a Kalispell man missing since Sunday, came to a grim conclusion Friday when his body was found in Glacier National Park.

Park dispatch received a report of a body below The Loop area of Going-to-the-Sun Road and rangers began a search. 

The body of Johnson, 25, was discovered about 9:45 a.m. Friday, according to park spokeswoman Denise Germann.

Because of the steep and rocky terrain, a helicopter and specialized short-haul rescue team from Parks Canada helped recover the body. 

Going-to-the-Sun Road was temporarily closed during the recovery. The Loop is the hairpin turn where Sun Road angles toward Logan Pass.

The Kalispell Police Department, Flathead County Sheriff’s Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation all were involved with the search and recovery operations during the last week. Many friends and relatives also spent hours searching for Johnson, who worked at Nomad Global Communications Systems. 

Johnson’s body has been transported to a funeral home and an autopsy will be conducted, Germann said.

Family and friends reported Johnson missing to Kalispell Police after he failed to show up for work at Nomad on Monday morning.

A press release Kalispell Police issued on Wednesday said Johnson was last seen Sunday night and was believed to have left his home with some unidentified friends in a black car headed toward Hungry Horse and West Glacier.

Johnson had moved into a new home on June 22 and seven days later married his fiancee, Jordan.

The investigation into Johnson’s disappearance and death continues. 

Cameron Fredrickson, a co-worker at Nomad, had no additional details to share Friday. “Only thing I will say is that Cody is a better person than most of us and it shouldn’t have been him,” Fredrickson said.
