HELENA — A pair of local golfers made big moves on Thursday in the second round of the Montana State Men’s Amateur golf tournament at Green Meadow Country Club.

Kalispell’s Ryan Porch and Whitefish’s Reed Platke each went low, shooting 2-under-par rounds on a day that roughed up most of the golfers in the field.

Porch recovered from a tough opening day with five birdies in his second round, cutting his total to 4-over 146, seven strokes back of the lead in a tie for 15th. Platke also made a big turnaround, turning in four birdies, including one on the par-5 18th hole, a place he double-bogeyed the day before. Platke is two strokes back of Porch at 6-over in a tie for 23rd.

The marks were the second-lowest on the day, trailing only defending-champion Nathan Bailey, who made his push toward a fourth straight amateur title with a 4-under 67. Bailey, who eagled the par-5 11th in his magnificent round, sits one shot off the lead entering the third round. Billings’ Brandon McIver held on to his opening day lead with an even par round, remaining at 3-under for the tournament.

Only nine of the 113 golfers carded a round at even par or better on what turned out to be a tough day on the course.

Kalispell’s Logan Iverson, who entered the day tied for 12th, was one of many who struggled to keep his momentum going from the opening round. Iverson posted three bogeys and two double bogeys on the front nine, needing four birdies on the way in to salvage a 5-over round. He now sits at 6-over for the tournament, in a tie with Platke for 23rd.

Libby’s Joe Cielak bogeyed his first two holes on a 5-over round of his own. He’s tied with Whitefish’s Tyler Schiff for 27th at 7-over. Schiff bogeyed four of his last six holes to finish a 3-over for his round.

Kalispell’s Brittain Walton is at 10-over after a 77 and Tom Mann (80) and Jason Winkler (76) are both sitting at 11-over. Whitefish’s Dave Streeter is 14-over, shooting a 79, Joel Mallams is 22-over (81) and Libby’s Ricky Stindt is 34-over (90).
