HELENA — A pair of local golfers found low scores during up and down rounds on Friday at the Montana State Men’s Amateur golf tournament at Green Meadow Country Club.

Whitefish’s Reed Platke and Kalispell’s Logan Iverson each eagled during the third round, salvaging rough outings to remain in the top 20.

Platke shook off a bogey on the first hole to birdie the second and eagle the par-5 third. But the early momentum wasn’t enough to carry over to the rest of the round. He bogeyed holes five and six to fall back to even par by the turn and had three bogeys and three birdies on the back nine to stay even for the round. Platke is 6-over-par for the tournament in a tie for 16th place entering the final day.

Iverson had a much different start to his round, hitting bogey, bogey, triple bogey on his first three holes, digging in for a long day. But, he bounced back quickly, shooting a birdie on the fourth and eighth holes to head out at 4-over. He shot an eagle on the par-5 11th and birdied the 14th and 18th to salvage a 1-over round to enter the weekend at 7-over in a tie for 20th place.

Neither score is likely to get close enough to challenge for the lead after Billings’ Brandon McIver shot a 6-under 65 in his third round to extend his lead to three strokes at 9-under for the tournament. Three-time defending champion Nathan Bailey couldn’t keep pace, shooting an even-par round to stay at 2-under, seven shots back in fourth place.

Lewistown’s Chris McConnell is still within striking distance after a 66, leaving him at 6-under for the tournament in second place. Billings’ Jake Hedge had the low round of the day, shooting a 64 to move into third place at 4-under.

Kalispell’s Ryan Porch was 4-over in the third round, falling back to a tie for 23rd at 8-over. Libby’s Joe Cielak and Whitefish’s Tyler Schiff each shot a 74 to fall to 10-over in a tie for 26th.

Kalispell’s Brittain Walton, who shot 79, and Jason Winkler, 78, are each at 18-over. Kalispell’s Tom Mann, 80, is at 20-over; Whitefish’s Dave Streeter, 81, is at 24-over; Whitefish’s Joel Mallams, 83, is at 34-over and Troy’s Ricky Stindt, 88, is at 51-over.

The tournament concludes today.
