Banned book sculpture going up at library
A 7-foot metal sculpture featuring 29 banned books will be on display at the Flathead County Library beginning Aug. 2, with an opening reception at 5 p.m.
“Banned Challenged Censored” is the creative effort of Bozeman-based artists Collin Letts, George Cole and Sara Williams. The opening will feature a brief artists’ talk and an opportunity to discuss the piece with the creative team.
Funded by more than 60 individuals and Humanities Montana, the sculpture includes books, magazines and art that have been challenged across the United States. Books featured in the sculpture include classics as well as newer titles, including “The Grapes of Wrath,” “Daddy’s Roommate,” “The Color Purple” and “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian.”
“Banned Challenged Censored” opened in October 2012 at the Bozeman Public Library. It has traveled to public libraries in Butte, Billings, Missoula and Helena. The sculpture will be on display in Kalispell through Sept. 14, after which it will be at the Great Falls Public Library.
