More summer art classes available for kids, adults

| July 24, 2013 6:00 PM

There is still time to take advantage of some of the coolest art offerings at Stumptown Art Studio this summer. Camps for kids and workshops for adults continue throughout the month of August.

Youngsters ages 5 to 7 can take a journey with “Latin American Art.” The week of July 29 through Aug. 2 from 10:30 a.m. until noon, art, music, culture and language of Mexico, Central America and South America will be combined to create such things as Aztec sun gods, Mola designs and tree-bark paintings, while listening to the rhythms of Mayan, Aztec and Mapuche tribes.

“Hot Fun in the Summertime” can be enjoyed by 7- to 9-year-olds in this camp the week of Aug. 5 through 9. From 1 to 2:30 p.m. students will create sand candles, beach games, sunburst tie dyes and solar prints.

Aug. 12 through 16 is the final summer camp before the fall schedule, which begins after Labor Day. Youths ages 9 to 11 can let their imaginations soar “Up High in the Sky” by making kites, flying mobiles and inspiring T-shirts from 1 to 2:30 p.m. daily.

Adult workshops in August include the Cultural and Art History Club on Aug. 13, glass fusing on Aug. 14, precious metal clay Aug. 5 and 6, and Canvas & Cocktails Aug. 30.

A clay class in the Clayground with resident potter Stephanie Seguin can be arranged to suit your schedule. Included are two hours of instruction in wheel throwing or other techniques.

Continuing also throughout the summer are the Windows On Whitefish mosaic classes. Beginning students will be able to make a 24-inch mosaic fish Aug. 13 or Aug. 19, and experienced students can make a hanging garden charm Aug. 14 or Aug. 20. Upon completing a class, all students are invited to return to work on the third big window of the WOW community art project.

Founded in 1995, Stumptown Art Studio is a nonprofit community art center with art opportunities for everyone. During regular open hours, which are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, anyone may come in and paint pottery, try glass fusing or make mosaics in the ceramics annex.
