Mariners, Loggers notch wins at district tournament

EUREKA — Back-to-back two-run innings helped the defending champion Mission Valley Mariners post a 5-2 victory over a very determined Kootenai Valley Rangers squad on Thursday at the Western A District American Legion Baseball Tournament.

Mission Valley (50-18) is the top seed while Kootenai Valley is the eighth seed.

Jeremiah Crawford went the distance on the mound for the Mariners. He gave up seven hits, struck out 10 and walked four batters.

RJ Glover had a strong outing for the Rangers in the final tournament game on opening day. He went the full nine innings, allowed 10 hits, fanned four batters and did not issue a walk.

Zeke Webster-Yaqui, 3 for 4, doubled for the Mariners and drove in a run. Ryan Pablo, 1 for 4, had the team’s other extra-base hit — a triple.

TJ Olson went 2 for 3 and drove in a run for Mission Valley.

Kootenai Valley’s top hitters were James Dunn, 3 for 4, and Brandon Conard, 2 for 4.

Galen Sullivan had a double for the Rangers.

The double-elimination event runs through Monday. The top two teams move on the state tournament Aug. 1-5 in Helena.

Mission Valley won its fourth district championship since 2002 last year by defeating Libby 10-2.

Libby won the district title in 2011.

EUREKA — Nine different players had at least one hit, led by Jared Winslow and Oliver Grupenhoff with three apiece, as Libby rolled over Glacier.

Grupenhoff and Andrew Haggerty, 2 for 6, both tallied three RBIs.

Libby (33-20) scored four runs in the second and fourth innings and five in the ninth.

Jayce Fagerland, Jake Slaybaugh, Peter Seymor and Brandon Maassen had two hits each for Glacier.

Maassen doubled and Seymor hit a triple.
