Remembering those in harm's way

Our soldiers serving on the other side of the world got a VIP visit this week from Montana Gov. Steve Bullock.

We join them in thanking the governor for remembering those in harm’s way.

The visit far, far away — a sign at the Kuwait air base reads “Kalispell MT 6,984 mi” — was a great opportunity to show support for our citizen soldiers serving in Kuwait and Afghanistan.

Part of Bullock’s itinerary included meeting members of the Kalispell-based Montana National Guard’s 495th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion. He also visited the 1-189th General Support Aviation Battalion.

With 233 Montana National Guard troops deployed overseas, it was a welcome gesture for the governor to show support for our troops far from home.

‘Best of Flathead’ is coming

Bragging rights are on the line as the Daily Inter Lake puts the finishing touches on its annual Best of the Flathead special section that will be inserted in Saturday’s edition.

This year’s contest was conducted exclusively online and thousands of votes were cast for some of our favorite people, products and places. There are a few local businesses that always rise to the top. Spencer & Co. has garnered the Best Steak award every year since the reader poll began more than a decade ago. Alley Connection has yet to lose for Best Asian Food, and Los Caporales consistently places first for Best Mexican Food.

There are lots of new categories in this year’s poll, so grab a Saturday paper and read about the best... and all the rest.

The Event: See it yourself

Don’t take our word for it — go see for yourself! Equestrian riding competitions are exciting, beautiful, and a remarkable combination of human and equine talent.

The Event at Rebecca Farm, which is now in its 12th year, is one of the foremost equestrian events in the world — turning a 640-acre farm in the West Valley into a magnet for thousands of visitors and some of the best riders and horses in the world.

Competition is held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today, Saturday and Sunday. Admission is free. The public entrance is located at 1010 West Springcreek Road northwest of Kalispell.
