Legion baseball: Loggers slip past Mariners at Western District Class A Tournament

EUREKA — Micah Germany went the distance on the mound and scored the game-winning run on a single by Josh Foote in the top of the ninth inning as the fourth-seeded Libby Loggers edged the top-seeded Mission Valley Mariners 8-7 on Friday on Day 2 of the Western District Class A American Legion baseball tournament.

Mission Valley scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to tie it up at 7-all.

Germany and catcher Oliver Grupenhoff both had two hits in five trips to the plate for the Loggers. Foote was 2 for 4 and had two RBIs.

Germany gave up nine hits, issued six walks and struck out five.

TJ Olson led the Mariners offensively, going 3 for 4. Alex Killian and Jeremiah Crawford both had two hits. Ryan Pablo drove in two runs.

Libby also took advantage of seven errors by the Mariners, the defending district champions.

Libby (34-20) moves on to the semifinal round in the double-elimination tournament to face the Missoula Mavericks today at 2 p.m. Missoula defeated the Bitterroot Bucs 6-2 in the other winner’s bracket contest on Friday.

The Loggers were district champions in 2011 and lost in last year’s championship game.

The loss drops Mission Valley (50-19) into loser-out action today.

The double-elimination tournament ends Monday. The top two teams move on to state Aug. 1-5 in Helena.

EUREKA — Missoula leadoff hitter Jackson King homered and drove in three runs to push Missoula past the Bitterroot Bucs.

The Mavs broke the game open with a 4-run fifth inning and added two more runs in the eighth.

Bitterroot pitcher Cody Rolshoven and Brad Schaff held Missoula to three hits.

Missoula’s Zanon Fulbright and Bitterroot’s Patrick Pape both doubled.

Missoula moves on to semifinal play today with Libby at 2 p.m.

The Bucs fall into loser-out action at 8 a.m.
