BNSF Railway Co. is marking the completion of the Whitefish River cleanup project with a public ceremony and dedication of the Whitefish Landing, a new public river access and canoe/kayak landing.

The event will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 1, at the landing. Whitefish Mayor John Muhlfeld will join BNSF representatives for a ribbon cutting ceremony at the new park.

Whitefish Landing was created with a $25,000 grant from the BNSF Foundation, and it coincides with the completion of a five-year project to remove contaminated sediment from the Whitefish River as well as the Mackinaw Bay cleanup on Whitefish Lake.

The landing and park also allow direct access to the pedestrian pathway that leads to the city center.

To reach Whitefish Landing, turn left off Baker Avenue onto First Street; proceed west on First Street until it dead-ends at Miles Avenue.  Park on the street in the vicinity of First Street and Miles Avenue and walk north on Miles to the BNSF property entry gate just west of the intersection of Miles and Railway Street. Before the entry gate, walk to your left on the paved Whitefish trail about 75 yards to the Whitefish Landing.
