Museum screens 'The Mouse That Roared'

| June 12, 2013 6:00 PM

During the summer months, the Museum at Central School will change the day it offers its regular free film screenings.

In June, July and August, the Kalispell museum will screen movies on the last Monday of the month, rather than the last Tuesday, to avoid conflict with Kalispell Parks and Recreation’s concerts in Depot Park.

This month’s film, “The Mouse That Roared,” starts at 7 p.m. June 24.

In this 1959 adaptation of Leonard Wibberley’s satirical novel, the world's smallest country, the Duchy of Grand Fenwick, stays afloat by exporting wine to America. But when California bottles a cheaper version, bankruptcy looms for the tiny duchy. Citizens take matters into their own hands by waging war against America, so they can then surrender and apply for foreign aid.

In a comic tour de force, Peter Sellers plays three separate roles. Jean Seberg co-stars, and Jack Arnold directs.

This summer's film club theme is foreign invasions. Besides “The Mouse That Roared,” summer screenings will include “King of Hearts” (1967) with Alan Bates on July 29, and The Beatles in “A Hard Day's Night” (1964) on Aug. 26.

Anyone may attend, and there is no charge. Donations will be accepted to help defray the cost of acquiring and showing the films.

The movie and popcorn are free, and wine, beer, pop and water will be for sale. Seating is provided, but people can also bring their own floor pillows, portable chairs, or whatever is comfortable for viewing the film.

The Museum at Central School is located at 124 Second Ave. E., Kalispell. Call 756-8381 for more information.
