New book out about iconic Sun Road

| June 12, 2013 6:00 PM

San Francisco author Bill Yenne has released a new book, “Going-to-the-Sun Road.”

The book is the newest addition to Arcadia Publishing’s Images of America series. Yenne’s book boasts more than 200 vintage images and memories of days gone by.

In 1910, Glacier National Park was created in the million-acre swath of mountains, lakes and glaciers that naturalist George Bird Grinnell called “the Crown of the Continent.” Soon plans were being made for a road that would take visitors into the heart of the park. The result was Going-to-the-Sun Road, which has been the centerpiece of the visitor experience in Glacier since its formal dedication in 1933.

Yenne’s book includes points of interest along the road, described and depicted in milepost-consecutive order; maps and architectural diagrams; and images of signature Sun Road wildlife sightings, such as grizzly bears, wolves, moose and bighorn sheep.

“Going-to-the-Sun Road” is available at local bookstores and online retailers or through Arcadia Publishing, www.arcadiapublishing.com.

Yenne grew up within Glacier Park, where his father was supervisor of backcountry trails for nearly two decades and supervisor of roads — including the Sun Road — for a decade. Yenne has written more than three dozen historical works, including many on the American West, such as a narrative of the Lewis and Clark expedition and a biography of the Lakota leader Sitting Bull.
