Novels on tap at July meetings

| June 27, 2013 5:00 AM

Spend some relaxing moments reading this summer and gear up for local book clubs’ July meetings.

The Montana History Book Club discusses “Montana 1948” by Larry Watson at its July 11 meeting.

The novel tells the story of a traumatic summer for a 12-year-old in small-town Montana. David Hayden’s uncle, a war hero and respected doctor, is accused of molesting his female American Indian patients. David learns that truth is not what one believes it to be, that power is abused and that sometimes people must choose between family loyalty and justice.

The book is available for checkout through the Flathead County Library System.

The club meets at 6:30 p.m. in the basement conference room at the Museum at Central School, 124 Second Ave. E., Kalispell. For more information, call Diane at 752-0204.

Bad Rock Book Discussion will talk about “The Lake of Dreams” by Kim Edwards at its July 18 meeting.

Lucy Jarrett is still haunted by her father's unresolved death a decade earlier. She returns to her hometown in upstate New York, and, late one night, she discovers a collection of objects. They appear to be idle curiosities, but soon Lucy realizes that she has stumbled across a dark secret from her family's past, one that will radically change her — and the future of her family — forever.

The discussion begins at 7 p.m. at Bad Rock Books on Nucleus Avenue in Columbia Falls. All are welcome.

Treats will be provided.

For additional information, call Carol Rocks at 892-0515.

The Whitefish Library Book Discussion Group will take about Wendell Berry’s “Jayber Crow” at its July 31 meeting.

The title character changes direction from his pre-ministerial studies to become a barber in a small town after tough questions drive him from seminary. But from his perch behind the barber’s chair, Jayber learns to live out those tough questions and accept the gifts of community that enclose his answers.

The book may be available for checkout.

The group meets in the Whitefish Community Library meeting room, 9 Spokane Ave., Whitefish. The meeting starts at 6 p.m. Everyone is welcome.
