AA Boys State Basketball: Wolfpack slips in semis to Missoula Hellgate
GREAT FALLS – The third time wasn’t a charm for the Glacier boys against Missoula Hellgate.
The Wolfpack nearly erased an impossible lead, but couldn’t connect late, losing to the Knights 48-45 in the semifinals of the Class AA state basketball tournament on Friday at Four Seasons Arena.
Down six points with 45 seconds left, the Pack gave itself a chance to tie at the buzzer. Bryan Michaels, who hit a three-quarter court shot in Great Falls earlier this season to beat C.M. Russell, launched a last-second heave, but hit the loud speaker above the court, ending the game.
Glacier controlled the first half, but couldn’t find its rhythm after the break. The Wolfpack offense scored just two field goals in the first seven minutes of the third quarter, falling behind 38-32.
Glacier closed the lead early in the fourth and trailed just 40-39 with five minutes to play, but couldn’t keep it going. The Pack scored just two points in the next four minutes and found itself down 47-41 with 44.7 seconds to play.
Senior center Ryan Edwards got to the line to hit 1 of 2 free throws with 26 seconds left and Reid Siderius answered a Hellgate free throw with a 3-pointer with six seconds to play. Hellgate missed a pair of free throws on the ensuing possession, but Michaels couldn’t convert after pulling in the late rebound.
“We put a set in that was working pretty well (against the Hellgate zone),” Glacier coach Mark Harkins said. “They made some adjustments and I didn’t adjust well the other way. We really struggled in the second, third and fourth quarter to get a basket.”
Glacier dominated the first quarter, scoring the last 10 points of the frame to take a 19-11 lead. Things slowed down in the second quarter, but the Pack still led by seven, 26-19, with 2:29 to play.
Glacier, however, scored just one more bucket before half, as Hellgate cut the Wolfpack lead to 28-27 at the break, robbing all the Pack’s early momentum.
“They had a good plan,” Harkins said. “I thought we still got some pretty good looks, we just struggled to put it in the basket. It’s one of those nights that we struggled to score. It came down to the end and we couldn’t quite finish.”
Glacier is still alive in the tournament, and will advance to a loser-out game today against Great Falls High, to be played at CMR at 9 a.m. The Bison rolled in its loser-out game on Friday, beating Missoula Big Sky 57-44.
“This is a hard bounce back game,” Harkins said. “Our focus is going to be primarily getting them ready to play. Convince them all is not lost, the sun’s going to come up tomorrow and that sort of thing.
“(We can) make a run for a third place trophy. That’s something we’ve never done. That’s still a good goal. We’re disappointed right now but we’ve got to get past that and come ready to play tomorrow.”
