GREAT FALLS — The Glacier boys showed why they were a top seed, blasting Butte 75-39 in the first round of the Class AA state basketball tournament on Thursday at Four Seasons Arena.

The Wolfpack didn’t score for the first two and a half minutes of the game but took off after that.

Tied 4-4 midway through the first quarter, the Pack went to the post, picking up its aggressiveness to physically control the Bulldogs. Glacier closed the quarter on a 10-2 run, all the points coming on layups or free throws.

The Glacier bench took over in the second quarter, scoring the last 16 points for a 34-16 lead at the break.

But it wasn’t until the third quarter when the team really took off, scoring 18 straight points while holding Butte scoreless for nearly four minutes. The Wolfpack scored the first 10 points of the fourth quarter before pulling its starters with more than five minutes still to play, leading by 41.

“In the second half they were a little settled down and they hit those shots,” Glacier coach Mark Harkins said.

Glacier (18-3) dominated every phase of the game, shooting nearly 50 percent from the field and forcing Butte into 34 turnovers. Glacier senior wing Reid Siderius was 4 for 5 from 3-point range and senior center Ryan Edwards had eight blocks.

“I was happy with their effort, I was happy with their intensity, I was happy with their tempo,” Harkins said.

“It was a good day.”

Siderius finished with a team-high 18 points. Edwards had 11 points and Matt Peters had 10 for Glacier.

Dallas Cook led Butte (5-17)with 21 points.

“Reid was awesome today,” Harkins said.

“I was real excited to see him play like that. He was just shooting the ball with so much confidence. I told him any look you get you shoot it. You could tell he had it going.”

Glacier advances to the semifinals for the second straight year, where they will play a familiar opponent in Missoula Hellgate (18-4) at 3 p.m. today. Hellgate beat defending state champion Billings West (18-4) 60-59 to advance.

This will be the third meeting between the schools this season, the last two blowouts for each of the home teams. Glacier won 69-37 in Kalispell in the last game of the regular season and Hellgate won 53-32 in Missoula on Jan. 31.
