Three Glacier High School students have qualified for the 2013 Presidential Scholars Program.

Graduating seniors Trevor Kenkel, Jake Lockwood and Kristen Owens are among more than 3,000 candidates selected from roughly 3.4 million students expected to graduate from U.S. high schools this year.

Judging is based on superior academic and artistic achievements, leadership qualities, strong character and involvement in community and school activities.

A panel of educators will review submissions and select 500 semifinalists in early April.

The Presidential Scholars program, now in its 49th year, was established to recognize distinguished seniors.

Inclusion in the program is one of the highest honors for high school students.

Up to 141 students are named Scholars annually.

Scholars will be selected in May by a group of 32 citizens appointed by the president.
