Glacier Institute adds new programs

The Glacier Institute is celebrating its 30th year of teaching and bringing the wonders of nature to students of all ages.

 As part of its anniversary year, the institute is adding to its repertoire of courses in geology, fire ecology, nature ecology and elementary education.

“We are very proud to have welcomed thousands of students and adults in our first three decades,” Executive Director Joyce Baltz said. “We hope that folks will come out and support our fundraising efforts for youth programs at Big Creek Outdoor Education Center, as well as join us on the trail.”

 New programs

— Private Educational Tours — Available daily for those who would like to experience Glacier Park on their own terms and at their own pace. Tours include treks to places such as Logan Pass, Apgar Lookout, Avalanche Lake and Grinnell Glacier. 

— Glacier Institute Family Camps — Bring generations together while learning about the environment in Glacier. Family camps include transportation, hiking trips, family meals, lodging and campfire stories. Lodging will be at the Glacier Institute Field Camp cabins located near the west- side park entrance.

— July 6 to 11: Glacier Institute Master Naturalist Course —Intensive study to certify aspiring naturalists with 40-plus hours of training while enjoying the scenery of Glacier National Park.

July 16 to 19: World-renowned photographer Rick Sheremeta will share his gift for taking breathtaking images during four days of photo instruction.

“See America First: Trail and Rail Trek to Glacier National Park” (Dates not yet announced).

The nonprofit Glacier Institute serves adults and children as an educational leader in the Crown of the Continent ecosystem, emphasizing outreach and field-based learning experiences. 

The institute is a longtime educational partner with Glacier National Park, Flathead National Forest, Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks and Flathead Valley Community College. The institute offers family programs, youth science adventure camps, Discovery School at the Big Creek Outdoor Education Center and adult educational programs.
