COLUMBIA FALLS — Despite less than ideal conditions, there were a handful of athletes to hit big marks at the Columbia Falls Invitational on Thursday at Columbia Falls Junior High.

Polson’s Riley Sampson threw for state qualifying marks in both the shot put and discus, winning each event with ease. Sampson threw the shot 48 feet, 1 inch and had a toss of 142-4 in the discus.

Cole Jakovsky of Eureka cleared 13-1 in the pole vault to score another state qualifying mark.

Times on the track didn’t quite measure up to the performances in the field but Browning’s Emmitte DustyBull was able to pull away from the field in the distance events, finishing first in both the 3,200- and 800-meter races and finishing second in the 1,600. Whitefish, led by a handful of speedy stars, won five races to easily outpace the other schools for the lead in team points.

On the girls side, Whitefish’s Marlow Schulz won both the 200 and 400, hitting the qualifying standard in the 200. She is the defending state champion in both events.

Corvallis’ Lakyn Connors also won a pair of events, topping the field in the 100 and the 100 hurdles, scoring a qualifying mark in the latter. Teammate Katelyn Frost won the long jump with a state standard mark of 15-9.

Stevensville’s Katie Malachinski cleared 5 feet in the high jump to reach a qualifying mark.

The Polson girls, led by Claudia Hewston’s wins in the 800 and pole vault, won on team points.
