Anthony L. (Terry) Lupo, 91

Anthony L. (Terry) Lupo, 91, passed away April 29, 2013, at Kalispell Regional Medical Center.

Terry was born on Nov. 15, 1921, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Rocco Antonio Lupo and Maria Therese Mastrangelo. He attended public grade schools graduating from Public School 139 in 1939. He worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad Company from April 1940 until enlisting in the U.S. Navy in October 1942. During World War II he attained the rank of Pharmacist Mate 2nd Class with assignments at Balboa Naval Center in San Diego, Calif. and the Naval Hospital in Seattle. In 1944 he was accepted into the Navy V-12 NROTC officer candidate training and was assigned at several colleges including Doane College, Western Michigan College and the University of Notre Dame. He was released from active naval service in January 1946. He was an avid Brooklyn Dodgers fan ... until the team moved to Los Angeles. He would tag along with his brothers Joe and Sam to Dodger games and sit with Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig after the game whenever the Yankees played at Ebbets Field.

In February 1947 he married Phyllis Mary Riley, whose family were long-time Montana pioneers, her father owning the Glacier Dairy in Kalispell. In 1950 they moved from Brooklyn to Kalispell where he worked at the H.E. Richard Accounting firm, which he later purchased. He retired from the Flathead County Appraisal Office where he served as the deputy assessor.

During the years he lived in Kalispell, he was actively engaged in many civic organizations including both Kiwanis and the Elks Clubs. In 1957 he was the president of the Kalispell Kiwanis Club. He was an active member of both Trout and Ducks Unlimited and enjoyed golf and fishing well into his 80s. He was a member of St. Matthew’s Catholic Church where he could always be found at 8 a.m. Sunday mass, until recently.

He is survived by his sons Colonel (Ret.) Anthony T. Lupo and his wife Colonel (Ret.) Martha C. Lupo of San Antonio, Texas; L. Patrick Lupo and his wife Judith of London, England; and Michael Joseph Lupo of Kalispell; his daughter Maria Roberts of Helena; as well as eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by both parents; brothers Joseph Lupo and Sam Lupo; sisters Phyllis Gange and Mary Ferro; and his former wife, Phyllis Riley Lupo.

Visitation will be in the Johnson-Gloschat Funeral Chapel from 3 p.m. until the start of the Rosary at 7 p.m. on Monday, May 6. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church in Kalispell on Tuesday, May 7. Interment will be at C.E. Conrad Memorial Cemetery immediately following the mass. A reception will be held in the church basement upon return from the cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to St. Matthew’s School or any organization of the donor’s choice.
