POLSON — The Kalispell Lakers swept a doubleheader against the Mission Valley Mariners on Saturday, putting together 19 hits and 21 runs in two games.

“We had better quality at bats all the way around,” Lakers coach Ryan Malmin said. “We played a little small ball. The more reps we get, the more live looks we get, the better.”

Luke LaFontaine pitched a complete game shutout in the opener, throwing seven strikeouts and allowing just five hits in seven innings, leading Kalispell to a 6-0 win.

“He set the tone for us,” Malmin said. “He threw a lot of strikes, kept the ball down in the zone.”

The Lakers had a tougher time at the start of the nightcap, entering the fourth inning tied 3-3. The Kalispell bats responded with 12 runs over the next three innings to end the game early with a 15-5 win.

Chris Combs led the Lakers from the plate in both games, going 5 for 7 with two doubles a home run and three RBIs. Cleanup hitter Dillon Eaves was 5 for 7 with a double and six RBIs.

“Hopefully we can carry that momentum into tomorrow’s conference games,” Malmin said.

Kalispell plays Helena in a conference doubleheader today. Mission Valley hosts the Kalispell A team today for a nonconference doubleheader.
