Baseball roundup: Lakers start league play 1-1

The Kalispell AA Lakers baseball team opened American Legion league play Sunday afternoon at Griffin Field by splitting with the Helena Senators.

Dillon Eaves struck out nine, issued no walks and scattered nine hits as the Lakers pulled out a 5-4 victory in nine innings.

He went the distance on the mound.

Helena was on the offensive in the other outing, clubbing 12 hits en route to a 11-2 victory in seven innings.

Kalispell (7-5 overall, 1-1 league) forced extra innings in its victory by pushing two runs across the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie it at 4-all.

Both teams left six runners on base in that outing.

Dillon Matteson had two of the Lakers’ seven hits and he drove in two runs.

Eaves tripled and had one RBI.

Eaves, Charlie Obermiller and Sean O’Connell each had a hit in the loss. Obermiller doubled in that game.

Up next for the Lakers is its Canadian Days Tournament. Play begins Friday and runs through Sunday.

LIBBY — Joel Campbell tossed a 1-hitter and Brad Prichbeck drove in three runs as the Calgary Redbirds blanked Libby in the championship game of the Loggertown Wood Bat Classic.

Libby’s Will Reichel singled with two outs in the bottom of the third inning to spoil Campbell’s no-hitter.

Campbell did not walk a batter in the five-inning contest and struck out four.

Libby finished the tournament with a 2-1 record. The Loggers are now 3-4 on the season.

The Redbirds and Loggers have played four times this season with the teams splitting those games.

The Loggers face the Glacier Twins B in nonconference play on Wednesday in Whitefish.

LIBBY — A five-run third inning pulled Kootenai Valley within a run, trailing 6-5, but the Missoula Pioneers followed with a three-run fourth and pulled away from their for the victory at the Loggertown Wood Bat Classic.

Austin Perez had two hits for Kootenai Valley and Steven Eash had two RBIs.
