HELENA — A fast start propelled the Flathead girls to a divisional title on day two of the Western AA track and field meet Saturday at Vigilante Stadium.

Briana Patyk cleared 5 feet, 5 inches in the high jump, the first event of the day, and Mattie Mazur and Rhiannon Sturgess ran second and third in the 100-meter hurdles to help the Bravettes edge Helena High 112.5 to 97 for the team trophy.

Flathead’s Kwyn Johnson jumped 36-10 3/4 to win the triple jump and Dani Davis won the 100 in 12.7 seconds. Davis ran second to Helena’s Callie Kanthack in the 200.

“The girls did really well today in their sprints, hurdles and in the high jump and triple jump,” Flathead coach Tom Gillespie said. “We’ve been really strong all year in those particular events and they did really well today.”

The Bravettes placed second in two events and third in three events.

“We kind of have an unusual team in that we have a lot of kids that typically finish second, third and fourth,” Gillespie said. “That was the strength today, our depth in the events.”

He said Flathead’s winning time of 48.86 in Friday’s 400 relay was a Western AA divisional record.

Glacier finished fourth in the girls’ standings with 72.5 points. Leah Cook was second to Johnson in the triple jump and Shauna Williams placed second in the discus.

Kyle Griffith’s divisional title in the triple jump led the Glacier boys to a second-place finish behind Missoula Big Sky. Griffith jumped 45-10 1/4.

Flathead’s Zach Perrin beat Glacier’s Troy Fraley for first place in the 1,600, but the Braves finished seventh as a team. Perrin clocked 4:17.2 to beat Fraley’s time of 4:21.3.
