Hulslander chooses Air Force Academy
Glacier senior Taylor Hulslander is going up away into the wild blue yonder, committing to throw the javelin at the Air Force Academy.
Hulslander, one of three javelin throwers for the Wolfpack competing to medal at state, has thrown the javelin 184 feet, 7 inches this season and is one of the top academic performers in his class in addition to his athletic skills.
“He’s just a very dedicated and solid young man,” Glacier track coach Arron Deck said. “Whatever he chooses to do he excels in.”
Also the starting quarterback for the Wolfpack football team, Hulslander led Glacier to the state semifinals each of his two seasons at the helm, leading the team to the most wins in school history last season.
As a javelin thrower he holds the fourth-best mark in Class AA this season, and could get even better as he continues to grow.
“He’s successful for a reason,” Deck said. “He puts a lot of work into it. He’s going to grow and mature and just get more successful in the event.
“Competing at the high school level has always meant a lot to Taylor. He’s the ultimate teammate, very positive and competitive.”
After originally attempting to enter the academy academically, he was put in touch with the men’s track coach, who was interested in him as an athlete. He was admitted a few weeks ago.
“I like the prestige that it offers and serving our country,” Hulslander said.
Hulslander, who is undecided on a major, said he would like to be a pilot. He leaves for Colorado Springs on June 27.
