BOZEMAN — Flathead’s Zach Perrin and Matthew Tokarz and Glacier’s Keyawna Larson were individual champions Friday during opening-day action at the Class AA state track meet.

Perrin clocked 4:14.99 to edge Glacier’s Troy Fraley, 4:17.22, in the 1,600; Tokarz, 22-7 3/4, outjumped Glacier’s Kyle Griffith, 22-0, to win the long jump and Larson turned in a record-setting performance to place first in the javelin with a dandy throw of 140-8.

Larson’s winning distance easily bested the Glacier school record of 126-1 set in 2009 by Lindsey Maslow.

“Our biggest surprise,” Glacier coach Jerry Boschee said of Larson.

“She had a great week of practice. My javelin coach kept telling me she was going to surprise everybody.”

Boschee said five of Larson’s six throws were 18-feet further than her personal best.

“She’s just a strong kid,” Boschee said of Larson, who is only a sophomore.

“A great whip in her arm. Everything kind of aligned for her ... she had a phenomenal day.”

Flathead, 23 points, and Glacier, 22, are holding down third and fourth place after five events in the boys standings.

Flathead’s girls, 24.5 points, are third with Glacier, 22, tied for fourth after seven events.

Billings West, 35, and Billings Senior, 30, are the leaders for boys and girls, respectively.

The state meet concludes today.
