HAMILTON — Polson (5-4) made a furious comeback, but it wasn’t enough to top Hamilton (7-3), the Pirates losing 24-21 in the first round of the Class A football playoffs on Saturday.

Trailing by 17, with just 78 yards of offense at half, Polson made its charge late in the third quarter.

Pirates quarterback Andrew Weltz ran in a touchdown from 15 yards out to cut the lead with 2:30 left in the period. A 6-yard pass to Cedrick Smith and a successful 2-point conversion midway through the fourth pulled the Pirates to within three.

Polson stalled on a drive with three minutes to play and a Hail Mary attempt at the end of the game was tipped and intercepted.

Weltz finished 13 of 25 for 153 yards passing and two interceptions and had 62 rushing yards. Smith had 79 yards receiving on six catches. Polson finished with 248 total yards.

Hamilton’s Josh Bauder threw for 326 yards and Adam Smith ran for 153.
