Flathead wins opening AA speech meet

Flathead High School’s speech and debate team edged Glacier High School by one point to win the season-opening Garden City Kickoff Tournament in Missoula on Saturday.

Flathead racked up 183.5 points in final sweeps to Glacier’s 182.5. 

Sentinel finished third with 116.5 points.

“It was an exciting finish to the tournament,” Flathead coach Shannon O’Donnell said. “One of our areas of focus this year is to perform better in finals, and at this tournament they certainly did. Glacier has a great team and amazing coaching staff. If our kids continue to work hard, it should be an exciting year.”

Flathead or Glacier students won individual championships in 11 of 14 events at the Missoula meet.

Glacier and Flathead face off again Friday and Saturday in a tournament in Great Falls.
