| November 16, 2013 3:26 PM

Kathryn L. Schnaidt, 96, of Moorhead, Minn., formerly of Kalispell, passed away on Nov. 9, 2013, in after eventide on the eighth, in Moorhead.

Kathryn Louise Zinzow was born on April 24, 1917, in Wausau, Wis., to William and Helen (Page) Zinzow. She grew up in East Orange, N.J. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in art history from Oberlin College in Ohio in 1938. She moved to New York City, where she worked for 10 years in personnel at Time Life Publishing. She walked to work from her Manhattan apartment every day in high-heeled shoes.

Kathryn married Donald H. Schnaidt on April 11, 1945, at Donald's parents' home in Parkston, S.D. They moved to Kalispell in 1949. Kathryn worked as a bookkeeper and dental assistant. She went back to school at the age of 50 to become a social worker because she loved children. She was employed as a child welfare social worker, and eventually, social work supervisor, for Flathead County until her retirement in 1982.

Kathryn's life was marked by love and generosity and a brilliant smile. She loved children, particularly babies. She loved to decorate her house with flowers and to do crafts, especially counted cross-stitch. She gave her crafts to friends and family, and donated them to fundraisers for her favorite organizations.

Kathryn spent many years of her retirement working as a volunteer for United Way. She was also an active member of AAUW, PEO and the National Foster Parents Association. She belonged to Epworth Methodist Church in Kalispell.

She was an exceptional wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Kathryn moved to Moorhead to be near her daughter in 2005. In Moorhead, she joined First Presbyterian Church.

Kathryn is survived by her son, Mark Schnaidt of British Columbia, daughter, Martha and David Wheeler of Moorhead; grandchildren, Tanya and Bob Andrea, Daniel and Megan Wheeler, and Nicholas Wheeler; and great-grandchildren, Dean Mianscum and Tony Andrea.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Donald; and her brother, William Zinzow.

Memorials may be sent to United Way of Flathead County, P.O. Box 7217, Kalispell, MT 59901; or United Way of Cass-Clay, 219 7th Street South, P.O. Box 1609, Fargo, N.D. 58107-1609.
