Glacier's Avery wins AA golf title

MISSOULA — Glacier sophomore Teigan Avery shot a second-round 73 to hold off Billings Senior’s Kortney McNeil and win the Class AA girls golf state championship Wednesday at Canyon River Golf Club.

Avery finished with a two-round score of 145, edging McNeil by one stroke and Helena Capital’s Coral Schulz by five shots. Avery and Schulz entered the day tied for the lead after first-round 72s while McNeil was five shots back at 77.

McNeil was the defending champion after beating Avery by two strokes a year ago.

As a team, Glacier’s girls finished seventh with a score of 775. Kyrsten Siebenaler shot a 199, McKenna Tinseth shot 215 and McKenna Hulslander shot 216.

Flathead, led by Jenna Jensen’s 175, finished 12th.

Billings West won with a team score of 680. Butte was second at 688 and Missoula Hellgate was third at 701.

Tom Mann and Cody Sherrill led Glacier to a sixth-place finish on the boys’ side. Mann finished tied for fifth overall with a two-round score 149 and Sherrill was one-shot back in a tie for 10th. Glacier’s Scott Larson shot a 154 and Greg Jones finished at 166 to bring Glacier’s team score to 619.

Flathead’s Ryan Keenan was part of a four-way tie for 10th overall at 150 and the Braves finished ninth as a team with a score of 674.

Billings West won the team title with a score of 606, Missoula Hellgate was second at 609 and Billings Skyview was third at 614.

West’s Austin Berg edged Great Falls’ Cody Babinecz in a playoff for the individual title. Both finished with scores of 146. Hellgate’s Pat Colberg was third at 147.
