State AA golf: Glacier's Avery leads after opening-round 72

MISSOULA — Glacier’s Teigan Avery holds a share of the lead and the Wolfpack boys are still within striking distance of holding on to their team title after the first day of the Class AA state golf tournament on Tuesday at Missoula Country Club.

Avery, a sophomore for the Wolfpack, shot an opening-round 1-over-par 72 to hold a share of first place with Helena Capital’s Coral Schulz. This is the second straight year Avery has held the lead after the opening day, finishing second in her freshman season. Schulz, also a sophomore, finished third last year.

The girls lead Butte’s Hailey Hoagland by four strokes entering the final day, which will be played across town at Canyon River Golf Club. Defending state champion Kortney McNeil is five strokes back in fourth place. The Butte girls are in a commanding lead for the team title, with an 11-stroke advantage on Billings West.

Glacier is in seventh place as a team and Flathead is in 11th, led by Jenna Jensen, who is in a tie for 11th with an 87.

The Glacier boys are one of seven teams with a chance at the title in a close boys meet. The Wolfpack is in sixth place, 10 points back of Billings West and Missoula Hellgate in team points with a pair of golfers still in contention for the overall title.

Senior’s Sean Benson and Bozeman’s Scott Redelsperger are in a tie for first place, but don’t have much room behind them. Glacier’s Tom Mann and Cody Sherrill and Flathead’s Ryan Keenan are in a pack of 15 golfers that are within five strokes of the lead after the opening round.

Mann shot a 76 and is one of five golfers in a tie for sixth place while Keenan and Sherrill are each one shot back in a five-way tie for 11th.

The Flathead boys are in 11th place after the first day.

The tournament concludes today with the first golfers scheduled to tee off at 9 a.m.
