POLSON (AP) — A Polson man has denied raping and killing another man at Wild Horse Hot Springs, just outside the town of Hot Springs.

Melvin Madplume Jr., 29, pleaded not guilty Thursday to deliberate homicide and sexual intercourse without consent in the May 26 death of 28-year-old Laurence Kenmille of Elmo.

Prosecutors say Madplume initially told investigators Kenmille died after falling and hitting his head. An autopsy determined Kenmille had drowned due to homicidal violence. Court records say another man told investigators Madplume had made unwanted sexual advances toward him the previous weekend.

Madplume is being held without bond, but his attorney has requested a bond hearing.

District Judge Kim Christopher set a Jan. 17 trial date.
