Soccer roundup: Big Sky holds on to edge Glacier's girls

Glacier won all the statistical battles except for the big one on the scoreboard Thursday afternoon in girls Western AA soccer action at Glacier High School.

Kayla McCampbell scored twice on breakaways and took a cross from Cassidy Pierce to net her third of the match, all coming in the first half, as Missoula Big Sky held on for a 3-2 victory.

Glacier (4-4) outshot Big Sky 27-9 and led in corner kicks 6-1.

Carly Lane had 16 goalie saves for Big Sky.

“She played an amazing game,” Glacier coach Brenden Byrd said of Lane.

“Big Sky finished their chances. We played an amazing game.”

Byrd said midfielders Madison Zirker, Mikey Staats and Maddi Paulson “finally came together and played outstanding.”

Paulson assisted on Glacier’s first goal.

Scoring for Glacier were Kendall Halliburton at 33 minutes and Katie Thomas at 62.

Glacier is back in action Saturday hosting Flathead at noon.

LIBBY — The Whitefish girls struck quickly, scoring three goals in the first half to easily distance themselves for a win over Libby in a Northern A conference match.

Grace Kurtz scored twice in six minutes to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead and Whitefish held Libby without a shot for the game. Haley Nicholson also scored a pair of goals and Cassidy Grady added an insurance tally in the 59th minute.

Dana Kowachek opened and closed the scoring for Missoula Big Sky, which rolled over Glacier in Western AA action at Glacier High School.

Big Sky led 5-0 before Glacier’s Connor Brandon scored on a penalty kick at 60 minutes.

Big Sky had 22 shots on goal to five for Glacier.

Glacier is back in action Saturday hosting Flathead at 10 a.m. in the second crosstown match of the season.

LIBBY — Two late goals sent Libby to a tie with Whitefish during a Northern A conference match.

The Loggers’ Johnny Davidson served up two timely set pieces to Colin Maloney (76 minutes) and Giovanni Cano (80) to pull Libby even in the waning seconds of the match.

Whitefish had dominated play for most of the game, scoring two minutes in on a goal from Jon Dittman and on an own goal minutes before half. The Bulldogs outshot Libby 11-3 and had three corner kicks to the Loggers one.

“It was the best game we’ve played all year,” Whitefish coach O’Brien Byrd said.

“It was complete. We showed great skill, great heart and drive every minute of the game.

“It’s the most excited I’ve ever been about a game we tied. We had two or three guys that played the best games of their careers. ”
