Volleyball roundup: Bravettes 9th at Crossover Tournament

SPOKANE, Wash. — Flathead finished ninth out of 64 volleyball teams at the Crossover Tournament on Saturday.

Also competing were teams from Idaho, Oregon and Washington.

Flathead was the lone school from Montana in attendance.

Flathead started the day going 3-0 in pool play by beating Grandview from Yakima, Wash., 27-26, 26-24; Lake City from Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, 25-22 25-17; and Rogers from Spokane, 25-9, 25-15.

Then in the Gold Bracket, which featured the top 16 teams from pool play, Flathead defeated East Valley from Spokane, 25-15, 25-18; but lost to Rogers, from Puyallup, Wash., 22-25, 25-20, 15-5.

In one set matches for seventh through ninth place, West Valley from Spokane defeated Flathead, 25-21.

“Overall, a really good day,” Flathead coach Leon Wilcox said.

“We started to find ourselves a little bit. We played fantastic, we accomplished a lot.”

Wilcox was especially happy with the victory over a taller Lake City squad.

“It felt pretty good beating a team of that caliber,” he said.

Flathead returns to Western AA play on Tuesday hosting Missoula Sentinel. On Thursday, it’s the second crosstown battle of the season at Glacier.

WHITEFISH — Whitefish settled for a split in Class A action.

The Bulldogs (3-6 overall) defeated Hamilton 25-14, 25-11, 15-25, 25-18 to start the day. Corvallis followed with a 25-19, 25-11, 25-11 victory over the Bulldogs.

Both outings were nonconference.

“We were able to come out early, play strong from the beginning,” Whitefish coach Sarah Scott said against Hamilton.

“That really made a difference.”

Allie Schulz had nine kills for Whitefish in that match. Bekah Weaver led in assists with 15 and aces with six.

Marlow Schulz had six kills and three blocks against Corvallis. Maura Kalbfleisch totaled 14 digs.

“Corvallis is a strong team,” Scott said.

“They run a tough offense, really fast. It was hard for us to keep up with it.”

COLUMBIA FALLS — Columbia Falls finished off a long day on the court by downing Hamilton 25-19, 25-15, 15-25, 25-18.

Earlier, Corvallis topped the Wildkats (4-4) 25-9, 25-20, 25-15.

“Both teams came out swinging at us,” Columbia Falls coach Josie Brown said.

“Once we got our blocks down against Hamilton, we were able to run a quicker offense.”

Ciera Finberg, Winter Kemppainen and Haley Belgarde had five kills each in the Corvallis match.

Kemppainen added two blocks.

Against Hamilton, Belgarde had seven kills. Cydney Finberg, Carla Nicosia and Kemppainen had three blocks each.

Belgarde also had 10 digs.
