Cross country: Morley, Glacier boys fare well at 7-on-7

HELENA — Bigfork’s Makena Morley was at her usual best while the Glacier boys turned in a stellar performance at the Helena 7-on-7 Cross Country meet Thursday afternoon at Bill Roberts Golf Course.

Morley once again had the top time for girls, 17:00.60, in the No. 1 race. She finished 26 seconds ahead of Christina Aragon of Missoula Sentinel.

The 7-on-7 race format featured all the schools’ top runners competing against each other in the No. 1 race. The second best runners from each school ran in the No. 2 race. Same went for Nos. 3-7.

Glacier, second behind Bozeman in the team standings, had six boys finish in the top three spots of their respective races.

Kade McCutcheon was third, 15:42.17, in the No. 1 race.

Placing second were Logan Harmon, 16:07.41, in the No. 3 race and Tevyn Stetson, 16:31.69, in the No. 5 race.

Finishing third were Ruben Castren, 16:45.35, in the No. 4 race; Noah Hill, 17:00.04, in the No. 6 race; and Josh Gardner, 17:24.32, in the No. 7 race.

“They ran very, very well,” Glacier coach Mike McLean said of his boys.

“A real good effort ... straight across the varsity. They continue to improve.”

For Flathead’s boys, who were eighth in the standings, the top performer was Jordan Engle, 16:53.64, fifth in the No. 5 race.

Bozeman also won the girls team title. Glacier settled for fifth place and Flathead was 11th.

Corrine Hamilton had the best showing for the Wolfpack, finishing fifth in the No. 4 race with a time of 19:49.98.

“We had some good performances,” McLean said of his girls

“We were fourth out of the AA teams.

“That’s our best finishes ever at this meet for the boys and girls.”

Flathead’s girls were led by Julian Kaptanian, 20:38.73, who was ninth in the No. 5 race.
