Football roundup: Columbia Falls blows past Frenchtown

FRENCHTOWN — Zach Darling ran for three touchdowns and Ty Morgan caught three touchdown passes from quarterback Jared Trinastich to power third-ranked Columbia Falls (6-0 overall, 2-0 league) to a 54-13 Northwestern A football victory over Frenchtown (2-4, 1-2) Friday night.

Trinastich was 17 of 26 passing for 193 yards. He also hooked up with Josiah Osborne on a 29-yard scoring strike.

Morgan had six receptions for 104 yards. Darling totaled 85 yards rushing on 15 attempts.

Columbia Falls continues with league play on Friday at Libby.

LIVINGSTON — Walter Holliday caught a 3-yard touchdown pass from Luke May in the second quarter for all of the scoring in this Class A nonconference game.

Whitefish’s defense came up with two goal- line stands. The Bulldogs stopped Livingston at the 5-yard line in the second quarter and then blocked a field goal.

Livingston drove to the 5-yard line in the third quarter and turned it over on downs.

“Our defense would bend, but not break,” Whitefish coach Chad Ross said.

“They ran 40 plays and 37 of them were runs.”

Whitefish (5-2) hosts Frenchtown on Friday in a Northwestern A contest.

Polson 44, Libby 20

POLSON — Andrew Weltz had touchdown runs of 5 and 52 yards and passed 35 yards to Tanner Wilson for another score as Polson (4-2, 2-1) rolled past Libby in Northwestern A play.

Weltz finished with 107 yards rushing on 11 carries and passed for 114 yards by completing 6 of 9 passes.

Libby quarterback Jared Winslow had a hand in all of the Loggers’ scoring. He had touchdown runs of 2 and 9 yards and passed 10 yards to Josh Bowers for another.

Winslow was 20 of 40 passing for 250 yards.

“We jumped on them early,” Polson coach Scott Wilson said.

“We created some turnovers, blocked a punt, interception return (for a touchdown) and that kind of changed the game right there in the first half.”

Polson is back in action Friday hosting Havre in a nonconference game.

Bigfork 54, Plains 14

PLAINS — Boyd Rieke had touchdown runs of 1, 2 and 2 yards and hauled in a 17-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Josh Sandry as undefeated and third-ranked Bigfork rolled over Plains in District 7B play.

Rieke led Bigfork’s potent and balanced offense with 140 yards rushing on 16 carries. Vinny Quirk ran for 63 yards on nine attempts and scored two touchdowns.

Sandry completed 10 of 15 passes for 213 yards and no interceptions.

Bigfork (6-0, 2-0) led 40-8 at the half.

Plains (0-7, 0-3) held a brief 8-6 lead on Bigfork in the opening quarter when James Rulison bolted 79 yards for the touchdown and Ryan Ovitt passed to Trent Bruoillettee for the two-point conversion.

Bigfork, however, answered five minutes later with Sandry connecting with Cameron Nissen on a 23-yard touchdown pass. Nissen finished with four receptions for 94 yards.

Isaac Martel and Jon Landon both had interceptions for Bigfork.

Bigfork hosts Eureka on Friday.

Eureka 24, Troy 23

EUREKA — Eureka battled back in the second half to edge Troy in a wild District 7B matchup that included two safeties in the final quarter, one by each team.

Cole Jankovsky, 148 yards rushing on nine carries, scored on a 94-yard run for Eureka in the third quarter.

Trent Vaughn, 85 yards rushing on 15 attempts, had a 5-yard touchdown run in the second quarter for the Lions.

Austin Perez, 53 yards rushing on 12 totes, also scored on a 5-yard run in the second quarter for Eureka (5-2, 2-0).

Defensively, Vaughn, a middle linebacker, had a team-best 14 tackles. Outside linebacker James Dunn had eight tackles and an interception. Jankovsky, outside linebacker, also had eight tackles and an interception.

“It was a battle between two pretty evenly matched teams,” Eureka coach Trevor Utter said.

“We had to overcome big plays to beat them.”

Eureka also had two goal-line stands in the second half, stopping Troy at the 1- and 5-yard line.

Eureka plays at No. 3-ranked Bigfork on Friday.
