Gaiser leads area runners at Le Grizz

Scott Gaiser of Kalispell had the best showing for area runners competing in the 32nd Le Grizz Ultramarathon on Saturday at Polebridge.

Gaiser, 51, finished seventh overall with a time of 6 hours, 55 minutes and 45 seconds for the 50-mile race. He had the top time for the Senior Division (ages 50 and over).

Gaiser was competing in this race for a second time.

Mark Foust, 47, of Columbia Falls was 16th, 7:55:08; Mark Tarr, 51, of Columbia Falls was 22nd, 8:19:10; and Andrew Matulionis, 48, of Whitefish was 25th, 8:22:08.

This was Tarr’s 21st Le Grizz. He was won the ultramarathon 13 times.

The top local woman finisher was Kelly Hamilton, 41, of Columbia Falls. She was 50th overall, 9:35.21.

Tara McGovern, 27, of Kalispell finished 59th overall, 9:59.25.

A record 99 runners completed the race. Thirty-six entrants had never run 50 miles previously and 35 of them finished.

Andy Prevost of Great Falls was the overall winner, 6:24:10. Jed Rogers of Missoula took second place, 6:25:34.

Masters runner Debbie Gibson of Helena was the first women to cross the finish line, 7:17:56. She was 11th overall.

Mike Mustari of Edmonds, Wash., was awarded the 10 Bears award, a plaque clock for completion of 10 Le Grizz runs. 

The Chief 10 Bears Lifetime Achievement Award was presented for completion of 20 Le Grizz runs to Jim Ballard of Klamath Falls, Ore. 

The Cheetah Herders Athletic Club of Seeley Lake sponsored the event, assisted by the Kalispell Special Olympics, North Valley Search and Rescue, Polebridge Mercantile and local volunteers. More information on the event can be found at www.cheetahherders.com.
