Volleyball roundup: Bravettes bedevil Hellgate

The Flathead volleyball team bounced back from last week’s five-set loss to Glacier with a quick victory over Missoula Hellgate Tuesday at Flathead High School.

Flathead (12-8, overall, 6-3 Western AA) won the first set 25-18, then cruised to 25-11 and 25-13 wins in the second and third sets.

“We started a little slow, that seems to be one of the things we’re trying to overcome, but we picked it up,” Flathead coach Leon Wilcox said. “We were really strong in the middle and at the end, we’ve just got to get over those slow starts.”

The Bravettes outhit Hellgate 42-13. Emma Andrews and Timi Severson tallied 15 and 10 kills, respectively, and setter Jessica Simmons had 36 of Flathead’s 38 assists. Andrews recorded a match-high 21 digs and Severson had two of Flathead’s three blocks.

Hannah Lasche led Hellgate (4-12, 2-7) with four kills.

The Bravettes will compete at the Missoula Invitational Thursday and Friday.

Thompson Falls 3, Libby 2

LIBBY — Libby couldn’t hold its advantage in the first set, and fell apart late, losing to Thompson Falls 25-23, 17-25, 19-25, 25-12, 15-8, in a nonconference match.

The Loggers led by eight points early in the first set, and looked to cruise to victory even after a late push from Thompson Falls. Libby held a 23-18 advantage in the frame before the Blue Hawks rallied off seven straight points to win the set.

Libby won each of the next two games to take a 2-1 lead, but lost big in the fourth and again in the tiebreaking fifth to lose the match.

Devon Gallagher had a block and a match-high 14 kills for the Loggers. Mahalah Wedel had 48 of the team’s 111 digs and Hannah England led Libby with a block, four aces and 40 assists.

The Loggers head to the Missoula Invitational on Thursday and Friday to close out the week.

Polson 3, Stevensville 1

STEVENSVILLE — The Lady Pirates defeated Stevensville 25-22, 16-25, 25-12, 25-20 in a nonconference contest.

Jessica Hoel led Polson with 14 kills and the Pirates outhit Stevensville 45-26. Setter Jaiden Toth had all 37 of Polson’s assists and a team-high 19 digs and five aces.

MacKinzie Zimmerman and Kyla Paulsen each had seven kills for Stevensville.
