Celtic quintet on tap in Whitefish

| October 16, 2013 6:00 PM

Whitefish Theatre Company presents an evening with RUNA, a contemporary Celtic roots music quintet.

RUNA will perform their lyrical rhythms at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 25 at the O’Shaughnessy Center in Whitefish.

RUNA draws on the diverse musical backgrounds of its members to offer a lively and refreshing approach to traditional and more recent Celtic material. Through their repertoire of both highly energetic and graceful, acoustic melodies, along with their fusion of music from Ireland, Scotland, Canada and the United States, this vocal and instrumental ensemble gives its arrangements of traditional songs a fresh sound.

RUNA’s unique tunes have been praised as “innovative Celtic music at its very best.” Irish Philadelphia calls RUNA “an inspired group that has found its voice, and its place, in the world of Irish music.”

RUNA consists of vocalist and step dancer Shannon Lambert-Ryan of Philadelphia; Dublin-born guitarist Fionán de Barra; Cheryl Prashker of Canada on percussion; Dave Curley on mandolin, vocals, bodhrán, and step dancing; and Maggie Estes of Kentucky on the fiddle.

Members of RUNA have played with Solas, Riverdance, Eileen Ivers and Hazel O’Conner. RUNA was recently recognized on an international level in the 12th annual Independent Music Awards winning both the fan ballot and judges’ votes for Best Song in the World Traditional Category and in the Irish Music Awards, with a nomination for Best Female Vocalist for 2012.

In addition to the evening concert, RUNA will be offering outreach to Muldown Elementary and Helena Flats schools.
