Gilbert I. Burk, 95

Gilbert I. Burk, 95, passed away on Dec. 14, 2012, in Whitefish. He had resided in Olney for most of his adult life.

“Gib” was born on May 17, 1917 to Lena Talbot Burk and Gilbert E. Burk in Maywood, Ind. When he was 3 years old, his family moved back to their Montana home at his grandma’s ranch between Whitefish and Olney. He attended several rural schools including Tamarack Creek, Olney, Missoula and Kinshella Brothers logging camp where he graduated from the eighth grade. He started his logging career with Kinshella Brothers tie mill by skidding logs to the mill with horses. He later had his own tie mill and then became a logging contractor until he retired.

Gib was an active member of the Whitefish Moose Lodge for many years and held numerous office positions through the lodge. He was also an active bowling member of the Whitefish Bowling League for many years.

Gib was preceded in death by his parents; his infant son; his first wife, Enid; his second wife, Violet Widdifield; brothers, Ted, Louis, Albert, Bill and Jim; sisters, Clara Graves and Betty Enger Overbye; several nieces and nephews, sisters- and brothers-in-law.

He is survived by his sister, Mona Hansen of Whitefish, numerous nieces and nephews; and several sisters- and brothers-in-law, stepchildren and step-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19 at the Whitefish Moose Lodge, 230 10th St. in Whitefish. A meal will follow the services.
