High school orchestras in concert

| October 23, 2013 6:00 PM

The Flathead and Glacier high school orchestras will present their annual fall concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday in the Glacier High School performance hall.

Performing groups will be the Flathead High concert and chamber orchestras, and the Glacier High concert and chamber orchestras.

Monday's concert will feature pieces from a number of different genres. The concert orchestras will perform pieces ranging from "Over the Rainbow" and "The Gift" to "Afterburn” and "Dance of Iscariot."

Each chamber orchestra will perform a movement from a concerto grosso of the Baroque period, featuring soloists; they will perform these without a conductor.

In addition, the Flathead chamber orchestra will play "Phantom Tangos" by Brian Balmages and a rocking version of "Sweet Child of Mine"  from Guns N’ Roses, featuring Jhalen Salazar on guitar.

The Glacier chamber orchestra will invite the concert orchestra members to join them in "Kokopelli," which depicts a day in the life of the mythical American Indian flute player of the desert Southwest.

The piece features three percussionists and flute as well as string orchestra. Bodie Henderson, Nathan Connell and Levi Brown, percussion, and Audrey Sullivan, flute, will join the orchestra.

Finally the Glacier chamber orchestra will finish the concert with the jazz standard " Sing Sing Sing" by Louis Prima, also featuring Henderson.

Orchestra students who participated in the recent All State Music Festival will be recognized during the concert.

The concert is under the direction of Sherry Simmons, and is free and open to the public.
