Volleyball roundup: Glacier, Flathead sweep Helena schools

HELENA — The Glacier volleyball team (19-3 overall, 10-0 Western AA) clinched the conference championship in dramatic fashion Saturday, fighting back to beat Helena High (13-8, 7-4) in five sets 19-25, 15-25, 25-23, 25-22, 15-6.

“I’m really proud of girls for battling back,” Glacier coach Christy Harkins said.

Cassi Hashley had 13 kills and Brielle Bumgarner had five blocks as the Wolfpack swept the Helena schools in the Capital City for the first time in school history. It was also the first time Glacier has completed a season sweep of both Helena High and Capital.

Its place at the state tournament already locked up, the Wolfpack will look to complete its undefeated conference season with two games this week. Glacier hosts its final home game Tuesday against Hellgate and closes on the road Thursday at Missoula Big Sky.

HELENA — It was a statement weekend for Flathead.

The Bravettes were third in the conference standings before sweeping Helena High (Friday) and Helena Capital 25-14, 25-21, 26-24 on Saturday.

“It was big weekend getting both of those wins,” Flathead coach Leon Wilcox said.

“That secured second (place in the standings) for us. It was especially nice to do it on the road. They played really well both days.”

Flathead (15-3, 8-3) swept the season series with Capital and split with Helena High.

The Bravettes end regular-season play at home Nov. 2 with Missoula Big Sky.

Timi Severson led the Bravettes against Capital with 14 kills and five blocks.

Lizzie Sherwood had five of Flathead’s 11 aces.

Iris Matulevich had 12 digs for Flathead.

LIBBY — Libby toppled Whitefish in four sets in its final home game of the regular season.

The scores: 25-13, 25-17, 21-25, 25-22.

Dayln Germany and Devon Gallagher led the Loggers with 13 and 8 kills, respectively, and Libby outhit Whitefish 39-27 as a team. Hannah England tallied 28 of Libby’s 32 assists.

Libby (5-6, 2-4 Northwestern A) dominated at the service line with 23 aces. Kelsey Klin had a match-high six aces and Staci Regh had five.

Bekah Weaver and Myndi Holbrook led Whitefish (4-7, 2-4) with seven kills apiece.

BIGFORK — Hot serving carried Bigfork to a pair of District 7B victories over the weekend.

Bigfork (8-9, 5-3) had 30 aces on Saturday in a 25-14, 25-9, 23-25, 25-23 victory over Troy.

Alanis Stallknecht had nine aces and Kalia Wicklund six.

Bigfork trailed 23-17 in the fourth set when Josie Spoklie went to the service line.

“She consistently put the ball in play to get us all the way to 25,” Bigfork coach Melody Strauss said.

“A great weekend for serving. It was exciting to watch the girls rise up in that area.

“It was also great to see the girls battle and fight, especially in the fourth set,” Strauss added.

On Friday, Bigfork dropped Plains 25-21, 25-17, 25-16. The Valkyries had 21 aces in that match, led by Stallknecht’s nine and five by Lana Berg.
