Man doesn't show up for shootout

Whitefish Police evacuated the Chair 3 Apartments and nearby businesses Monday at around noon after getting a report from Veterans Administration officials about a resident who allegedly said he was going to have a shootout with police and kill himself.

Officers set up a perimeter and attempted to communicate with the man. “But lo and behold, it all turned out good, because he wasn’t there,” said Whitefish Police Chief Bill Dial. “He came riding up on his bike asked what was going on.”

The man was then detained for a mental health evaluation.

Sunday, a man calling from East Seventh Street at about 7:30 a.m. said he was walking his dog when he came across a suspicious man lying in some grass.

There was a report of several men having an altercation at a hotel on U.S. 93 South.

 A person calling the Flathead County Sheriff’s Office from U.S. 93 south of Whitefish Sunday reported finding a cat with an arrow in its face. The cat was still alive, but it was euthanized after being taken to a veterinarian.

There was a report of a teenage girl who was overdue from hunting in the Firefighter Mountain area north of Hungry Horse. The girl was eventually located.

Early Monday, at about 1:17 a.m., a woman calling from Klondyke Loop in the Somers area said there were kids in the neighborhood trying to break into houses and cars. A deputy located three juveniles, who denied knocking on windows and doors. The teenagers were transported to their homes and their parents were advised they would be contacted if there were any theft reports in the area.

Kalispell Police got a report Sunday from a man who said he let a friend watch his dog for a couple weeks while the reporting party was looking for a place to live. The man said he found a place, but his friend was refusing to give the dog  back.

An employee at a store on U.S. 93 North reported that a co-worker assaulted her by whacking her in the knee with a ream of paper. 

There was a report of a vehicle being vandalized while parked outside a casino on U.S. 93 South.

A woman calling from a Fourth Avenue East residence reported that her two intoxicated roommates were causing a disturbance. One of the men volunteered to stay somewhere else for the night.

Early Monday, at about 2 a.m., there was a report of a man being belligerent with employees and customers at a store on Hutton Ranch Road. The disturbance led officers to several people, including a woman who was cited for shoplifting.

There was a report of an employee assaulting a supervisor at a store on Fourth Avenue West North.

 There were at least 18 reports of power lines being damaged by high winds Sunday afternoon. The reports were from widespread locations but mostly seemed to be coming from the eastern and northern parts of the Flathead Valley.

A large portion of a roof was blown off of a business on U.S. 2 west of Columbia Falls.
