Salish poet, Calif. photographer team up on book

| October 31, 2013 10:38 AM

Salish poet Victor A. Charlo has collaborated with a California photographer in the new book, “Still Here: Not Living in Tipis.”

The book features more than 40 of Sue Reynolds’ evocative images paired with powerful poems from Charlo. The result is an immersive experience in ancient traditions and what it means to be an American Indian today from native and non-native perspectives.

Based on Reynolds’ new “Still Here” exhibit — another collaborative effort with Charlo — this latest work is about survival and resurrection in the face of long odds. Reynolds’ portraits and native celebration images join Charlo’s eloquent expressions of reservation life, revealing remote communities, honoring tribal ways that endure and acknowledging that walking in two worlds is hard.

“Sue’s new ‘Still Here: Not Living in Tipis’ book with Victor Charlo’s poems creates an incredibly powerful connection for viewers, offering them a new understanding of Native American people,” said Geir Jordah, director of PhotoCentral gallery in Hayward, Calif., where the book and exhibit are on display.

A portion of proceeds from book sales benefits the American Indian College Fund.
