Sheriff offers Halloween tips

With tonight’s Halloween festivities already gearing up, the Flathead County Sheriff’s Office wants to remind residents of several tips to get the most out of their night.

For trick-or-treaters, one of the most important things to remember is to be safe while walking around town — travel in groups with at least one adult, be careful crossing streets, cross only at corners, cross in groups and always look both ways.

Trick-or-treaters should only approach well-lit houses and remain on the porch rather than entering a stranger’s house.

Parents, particularly those driving, are reminded to watch for children on streets and medians and to exit driveways and alleys carefully. It is also suggested that parents inspect all treats for safety before children eat them.

Those handing out candy are asked to keep their pets indoors or secured in a back yard and to turn on their porch lights. Those not planning on handing out treats are asked to turn off their porch lights to discourage children from coming to the door.
