State AA girls soccer: Bravettes fall to CMR in opener
HELENA — Two late goals pushed Great Falls C.M. Russell to a 2-0 Class AA state quarterfinal girls soccer victory over Flathead at Siebel Fields Thursday afternoon.
The Rustlers broke a scoreless tie with Eme McLaughlin’s goal at 70 minutes.
Lindsy Pyette added an insurance score at 78 minutes. McLaughlin assisted on that goal.
“The battle of two halves is what it boiled down to,” Flathead coach Cory Wilson said.
“The wind was blowing straight down the field. We had the wind the first half and created some chances. The second half we just couldn’t get it out of our own end.”
The Bravettes came into state play having won six of their last seven matches.
Flathead (8-5-1) drops into loser-out action today versus Missoula Hellgate at 11 a.m.
CMR (10-4-0) advances to semifinal action versus Billings Senior at 1:30 p.m.
CMR, in the state tournament for a 10th straight year, finished third last year. Flathead is making its third trip in the last four seasons.
The tournament runs through Saturday.
