Whitefish galleries open for monthly event
Whitefish’s art venues will feature free admission, live music and refreshments during tonight’s Whitefish Gallery Nights event.
The monthly art walk features special events in the downtown area’s many galleries. A complete list of participating venues, as well as additional information, is available at www.whitefishgallerynights.org.
Following are a few of the exhibits that will be featured tonight and through the month of September:
The Purple Pomegranate is featuring the fiber artwork by a class in design, hand and machine stitch from the Gail Harker Creative Studies Center. The center is located in LaConner, Wash., and is led by Harker, an internationally known textile and fiber artist, author and teacher.
Students in Harker’s class include Patti Olds of LaConner, Nancy Drake of Anacortes, Wash., Lynette Barnes of Kelowna, British Columbia and Ruth Lane of Kalispell. The class completed its certificate in February.
Works on display tonight will include experimental stitch samples, design sketchbooks and innovative stitched pieces or books from an original design.
The Purple Pomegranate is located at 222 Central Ave. For more information, call 862-7227 or visit www.purplepomegranate.com.
The Walking Man Frame Shop and Gallery features works by St. Ignatius artist and kite maker Lindy Johnston.
Johnston, who grew up in Libby, found as a child that traditional kites weren’t very effective toys in the area, due to a lack of steady wind. In college, she discovered “fighter kites” native to the Himalayas and Japan. She has been making them ever since.
Not all of Johnston’s kites are intended to fly. “They either fly or attempt to fly, or else they are not kites, but about kites,” she says.
The Walking Man is located at 305 Baker Ave. For more information, call 863-2787 or visit www.thewalkingmanframeshop.com.
